Engineers at POSTECH have created an ultrathin, single-layer metasurface capable of performing two distinct optical tasks simultaneously. The device acts as a structural color printer under white light while functioning as a high-efficiency holographic projector when exposed to coherent light.
By utilizing specialized nanostructures, the team achieved independent control over the phase and spectral response of light. This allows the device to display specific colors based on nanostructure size while directing light for holographic imagery through the orientation of the same structures.
Tests confirmed that the platform maintains high efficiency at a target wavelength of 640 nanometers. By integrating three types of meta-atoms into one surface, the researchers demonstrated the ability to encode multiple layers of information, such as distinct logos or text, within a single compact device.
The demand for miniaturized optical components is rising as industries shift away from bulky traditional lenses and filters. Metasurfaces, which manipulate light using nanoscale patterns, are becoming essential for building thinner, more efficient hardware for consumer electronics and secure data systems.
This development addresses a common challenge in optical engineering: the difficulty of balancing high-resolution color reproduction with complex holographic performance. By successfully merging these functions, the research provides a pathway for more effective anti-counterfeiting measures and secure data storage solutions in a significantly smaller physical footprint.
