A recent study from the University of Houston is challenging the foundational theory behind electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). For decades, practitioners have argued that the scalp absorbs the majority of the electrical current used during treatment, protecting the brain from significant damage.
New research utilizing high-resolution 3D head models suggests the opposite. The study indicates that roughly 82.5% of the current passes through the brain and cerebrospinal fluid, while only 1.5% is absorbed by the scalp. Experts involved in the study suggest this energy converts to heat, potentially causing cellular damage and electroporation.
The Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) is using these findings to renew its push for a federal ban on ECT devices. They argue that the Food and Drug Administration should re-evaluate the risk classification of these machines, citing concerns about memory loss, cognitive deficits, and traumatic brain injury.
The debate surrounding ECT reflects a growing global movement toward stricter regulation of coercive psychiatric practices. International health organizations and various legislative bodies have increasingly questioned the safety and ethical implications of electroshock, particularly regarding its administration to minors and those unable to provide informed consent.
