ITASCA Software has launched MPoint2D and MPoint3D, the first commercial geotechnical tools utilizing the Material Point Method (MPM). The software is engineered to simulate large-scale structural deformation and material flow that traditional grid-based methods often fail to capture.
By tracking material points across a background grid rather than relying on a distorting mesh, the software allows engineers to observe how soil and rock systems behave during extreme stress. This approach eliminates the need for frequent remeshing, enabling more accurate modeling of post-failure scenarios.
The suite is designed for integration with existing ITASCA tools like FLAC, providing a hybrid modeling environment. It is intended to assist civil and mining engineers in assessing risks related to slope stability, dam performance, and tailings management.
Geotechnical engineering is shifting toward more robust simulation techniques as infrastructure projects face increasingly complex environmental and safety challenges. Conventional mesh-based modeling, while effective for small-strain analysis, often struggles to accurately predict the dynamics of landslides, dam breaches, or significant ground shifts.
The adoption of the Material Point Method signifies an industry-wide push to better understand post-failure behavior. As climate patterns impact slope stability and mining operations face stricter safety regulations, the ability to simulate large-scale, non-linear deformation is becoming a critical requirement for informed risk assessment and design.
