Two human rights activists, Norwegian citizen Nguyen Duc Thuan and Australian citizen Ho Pham Hiep Huy, have been detained by Vietnamese authorities. The men vanished in mid-September after traveling from Thailand to Cambodia to meet with local activists.
Vietnamese state media later confirmed the pair, along with a third individual, Thai Cong Truong Son, are in custody facing terrorism and document forgery charges. Officials allege the men were apprehended while crossing the border into Vietnam illegally.
Advocacy groups including the Vietnam Human Rights Network and Defend the Defenders reject the government's narrative. They contend the men were kidnapped by security forces in Cambodia and forcibly returned to Vietnam to face political persecution.
The incident reflects a broader pattern of transnational repression where dissidents are allegedly abducted from neighboring countries to face prosecution at home. International observers have documented similar disappearances involving activists and journalists in Laos and Thailand over the past decade.
This case highlights the ongoing tension between the Vietnamese government and pro-democracy organizations like Viet Tan. Human rights groups are now calling on the Australian and Norwegian governments to intervene and demanding that international bodies pressure Vietnam to halt these extrajudicial operations.
