Artist Gina Keatley has released a new series of five acrylic paintings titled Motto Motto. Created between studios in New York City and Akō, Japan, the collection explores the concept of extending the creative process beyond the point of initial completion.
The works feature a muted color palette of sand, cream, and smoke, accented by recurring flashes of mandarin orange. Each piece measures 48 by 36 inches and utilizes a layered technique involving scraping and rebuilding surfaces to achieve a weathered aesthetic.
Keatley developed these works while transitioning away from her role at Brooklyn’s Bushwick Gallery. She is now shifting her professional focus toward Salt Road Studio, an artist-led space in Japan dedicated to international exchange and residency programs.
The contemporary art world is increasingly characterized by a shift toward global mobility and cross-cultural studio practices. Artists are moving beyond traditional gallery hubs to establish independent platforms in diverse geographic regions, fostering international collaboration rather than relying solely on localized exhibition spaces.
This trend highlights a transition toward artist-run initiatives that prioritize sustained creative exchange and institutional autonomy. By integrating her practice into the Seto Inland Sea region, Keatley reflects a broader movement of creators seeking to synthesize varied cultural environments into their physical work and organizational infrastructure.
